Since coming across a description of this novel in a magazine back in 1999, I’d always kept it in the back of my mind to read, yet somehow never got around to it. Fast-forward years later, and to the availability of books on Kindle, and I was able to obtain a copy of ANGELIQUE’S DESCENT. It was worth the wait. The story, which takes place in the continuity of the original DARK SHADOWS series, visits the early life of Angelique Bouchard, the sorceress/femme fatale responsible for the plight of the pivotal central character, vampire Barnabas Collins.Lara Parker is equally as adept as a writer as she is as an actress. Having played Angelique on the small screen for so many years, there’s no one who knows the character better, and Ms. Parker superbly fleshes her out, peeling back the layers of her jealousy and hatred to reveal a truly tortured and conflicted figure. Appropriately, past events are described from Angelique’s perspective, through the discovery of her diary by Barnabas, who heads the familiar assortment of characters in 1971. Barnabas’ relationship with Angelique is a central theme that fuels the entire series, and the author depicts their first encounter at a tender age, leaving a strong impression on both.
She also likens Angelique’s witchcraft to Barnabas’ vampirism; it’s not something she embraces willingly, but the darkness within her that she’s constantly fighting, which eventually consumes her entirely and leaves her powerless to become anything other than what she is. Barnabas’ betrayal is the final catalyst of Angelique’s descent. Professing his undying love for Angelique and his goal for independence from his wealthy family, then caving to familial pressure and developing true love for Josette du Pres, coldly turning away from Angelique in the process, Barnabas often comes across as cowardly and hypocritical, making Angelique’s curse on him seem a fitting and deserved retribution. In spite of that, she continues to pursue him, her unwilling companion for eternity. Ms. Parker’s portrayal of Barnabas Collins is also spot-on.
Written by one who understands the iconic DARK SHADOWS characters, and who also brought one of those characters to startling life, ANGELIQUE’S DESCENT is a revealing tale delivered with the highest level of compelling drama found in the series itself.

I ordered this unabridged version of the book after listening to the shortened version produced by Big Finish, which was also narrated by Lara Parker. The author is an exceptional narrator, writer, and actor who has represented the voice and spirit of the Angelique character since its creation. It is such a delight to hear these stories come to life through the words and voice of Ms. Parker. This is one of those rare cases where I cannot imagine simply reading the printed word. I thoroughly enjoyed this unabridged audio book and have since ordered the other two recordings in the series. I can only hope Ms. Parker will also narrate the upcoming fourth title.
This is nothing less than an excellent story of how Angelique became the hateful witch of the series. Not only that, but it also explains how she developed such an interest in Barnabas. When Angelique was young she lived in Martinique and was badly abused by her supposed father in order to help keep the slaves in line. She was little more than a prisoner to be used by her father when he needed to hold a ceremony.
This background story is centered around a present-day story where a cured Barnabas plans to marry Julia. They both read a lesson book from when Angelique was young and finds out all these things.
It also explains how Angelique became a creature of darkness, how she learned things, and what kind of abilities she had. There is a slave rebellion brewing and Angelique is used by her father again. He also beats her. She and Barnabas have a romantic relationship and he promises to marry her after he returns from a year in America.
Eventually she ends up a lady's maid for Josette. She finds out that Barnabas has ambitions higher than a maid and from that point out it's a story of revenge for Angelique along with even moer deaths.
The best thing this book does is establish an actual motive for Angelique being the way she is. It doesn't necessarily approve her choice of actions, but it does give a logical reason why she turned dark. She had been severely mistreated as a child and had fallen in love with a guy who dumped her after promising to marry her. No wonder she wanted revenge.
She's gone overboard with it, of course, and is not only obsessed but is also very probably possessed of very questionable sanity. She didn't spring full-blown from the mind of Zeus but does have a reason for being angry (although that's not sufficient for killing, etc, of course.)
Lara Parker did an excellent job writing this origin book about Angelique's past. She probably understands the material better than the writers from the show. It not only gives the story as to how Angelique went bad, but it takes place after the series ended, too. In 1971, Barnabas Collins is free from his vampire curse and getting some-what romantically involved with Dr. Julia Hoffman, but he's still plagued by nightmares of the past and believes Angelique is somehow trying to come back and make him a vampire again.
In the 1700's, we meet a sweet innocent little girl named Angelique Bouchard is forced to live with her slave-owning dad and makes her pretend to be a Goddess named Erzulie in order to keep his slaves in line. I'll admit this part kinda dragged a little while with her being trapped in a room for a while. She has a book of spells and begins to practice small witchcraft.
Things really become interesting when Angelique finally breaks free and goes to Martinique and works for the Du Pres' family. This is when she meets Barnabas and falls madly in love with him. Her heart is broken when Barnabas is to marry Josette, and that's when she slowly starts to become the witch we all love to hate. It ties into the 1795 storyline pretty well. I hope I haven't ruined too much. If you love the series and want to read about how Angelique became who she was, you'll love DARK SHADOWS ANGELIQUE'S DESCENT!!!
